Larger ImageIn the 18th century, no wealthy household would be complete without one or more bracket or table clocks to complement the static longcase clock. These clocks were designed to be portable and carried around the house. Because of their size, and attention to detail, bracket clocks were extremely expensive and the product of the finest London clockmakers.
The clock designs mirrored the period styles that influenced longcase clocks, the earliest recognized form being the "basket top," popular from 1675-1700. From the reign of Anne and persisting into that of George II, the "inverted bell top" was in vogue. The "broken arch-top" begins about 1765 and can be described as a Hepplewhite type. The "arch-top" is the "Sheraton" style of case, from 1785 onwards, alternating with the "ballon" in various forms and featuring fine marquetry.
These styles and traditions are all reflected in Comitti's collection. Improvements in design and technical progress has made it possible to offer these clocks with various movement types, such as 9 bell triple chime movements to precision quartz movements.
